For more than fifteen centuries before the Portuguese stormed ashore in 1510, seeking to put a lock on the spice trade to Europe, other seafarers from Rome, Venice, Ethiopia and Arabia had rowed and sailed their primitive craft across the Arabian Sea and up the Zuari River on a more peaceful mission. Their goal, to trade in our fabled ancient capitals, even those that existed before Goapakapattana, Chandrapur, and Govapuri. The hoards of Roman, Venetian and Aksumite gold coins that are still being found in our region are evidence of the extent of the ancient trade. Obviously our state with its rich and ancient history has far more to offer than meets the eye, and in this one extraordinary volume you will find all the rich lore of Goa, told in vibrant text and backed by vivid illustration. | | | A Toast to Papiya Papiya was taken away from our mindst in unimaginably tragic and brutal circumstances on 3rd December 2006. The loss is truly irreparable and something which is impossible to accept, more so as it seems be so wantonly senseless.
The website ‘Honouring Papiya’ at www.papiyaghosh.com is a must visit to get an insight into Papiya’s life and most cruel end. In this compilation entitled, ‘Toast to Papiya’, Papiya not only speaks in her own words but also lets her near and dear ones, colleague and associates celebrate her wonderfully inspirational and unique life, which she so skillfully downplayed throughout! Papiya evolved as a grounded, finely honed, deeply caring, compassionate and highly accomplished person, whose fragrance wafted through many lives and changed then irreversibly. It is not possible to do justice for one - so unique as Papiya in a few printed pages but the effort must be made. It is offered as a ‘chota’ ‘Toast to Papiya’ - She richly deserves many more such!! Papiya, you are ‘forever’ and we are so very proud to have been touched in countless ways by your very, very special life! You gave us all so much! And we realize how much we still had to reciprocate and share! With all our love and eternal togetherness. | | | | Towards Freedom in South Asia Towards Freedom in South Asia is a product of serious concern about issues relating to Democratization, Peace and Regional Cooperation in South Asia. A series of dialogues were organised under the auspices of the International Centre, Goa, which brought together a large number of young and experienced civil society activists from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Their collective desire was for a secure and prosperous South Asia. The book emphasizes the central role of Human Freedoms as providing a new paradigm for sustaining the future of 1.5 billion people of South Asia. The contributors to the book are united in their belief that the people, rather than the state in South Asia, have to be at the core of the discourse if it wishes to transform its destiny from the present web of conflict and deprivation to peace, well being, and prosperity. | | | The World Almanac and Book of Facts 2007 The World Almanac has been entertaining and informing Americans for generations. | | | Active Citizens under Political Wraps: Experiences from Myanmar/Burma and Vietnam
The essays in this volume were originally discussed at the two-day roundtable entitled “Societal and Political Change in Vietnam: An Instructive Example for Myanmar/Burma?” held in Berlin, Germany from 31 March through 1 April 2006. The seminar was organised by the Heinrich Boell Foundation in Berlin in coorperation with the German Institute for International and Security Affairs. The purpose of the roundtable was not so much to compare the two countries which commonly share certain specifics in terms of their respective forms and process of governance as to gain insight into a fascinating process by which pockets of citizens in both countries attempt to engage with sub-national level state institutions so that their local needs and desires are met, in spite of their seeming powerless at the hands of their respective states. | | | The Catalyst, A Tribute to a Professor
This book is a tribute to Professor Roy Chaudhury, an eminent scientist and outstanding teacher, as well as an empathetic listener, who has been a mentor for many of us. It was through his path breaking contribution to the promotion of rational use of drugs that today drugs are available in all the government-run hospitals of Delhi at an affordable price. Though he had won several prizes for his work and was awarded the coveted Padma Shree for his contributions in the field of medicine, we feel that this volume would be a personal tribute from all of us who have been fortunate to be associated with him.
This book was donated to Centre by Prof. V.S Mathur, formerly Professor of Pharamacology, PGIMER, Chandigarh. | | | The Delhi Model, Enhancing Access to Quality Drugs
“Deliverance from dreaded diseases.” Since time immemorial mankind has prayed, hoped and striven to attain this goal. Exception, enduring endeavour has borne drugs, which go very long way in alleviating suffering, overcoming illnesses and enhancing well being. When prescribed rationally, dispensed equitably, purchased economically, manufactured with quality assurance, drugs are a panacea; but if used irrationally they can lead to severe bodily harm and even death!
This book will be immensely useful for planners and providers of health facilities. Members of the public will be immensely benefitted by the precept and practice of drug delivery as enunciated in the book. This book was donated to Centre by Prof. V.S Mathur, formerly Professor of Pharamacology, PGIMER, Chandigarh. | | | Explorers of Inner Space
In the book "Explorers of Inner Space", Professor Padmasiri de Silva breaks new ground. He says that academic philosophy has been dominated by the culture of argument and debate. We are currently living in a world where polarized thinking and ritualised opposition has taken the place of dialogue. Deep listening is one of the corner-stones of the emerging perspectives in contemplative pedagogy and transformative education.Against this background, we hear in the voice of the Buddha, coming down the passage of twenty five cehnturies, and in the more recenht talks of Jiddu Krishnamurti, the transformative power of self-knowledge. The common thread of existentialist perspectives in the Buddha, Krishnamurti and the Danish thinker Soren KIerkegaard present a formidable front to awaken people to the struggle to be authentic and meet the quest for meaningful and authentic living.

) | | | The Spirit of Hiroshima
At 8:15 a.m., August 6, 1945, the worlds first atomic bomb used against human beings exploded over Hiroshima. Instantly, an entire city crumbled and burned. Hundreds of thousands of its people perished. Those who managed to survive suffered grievous mental and physical trauma, from which many suffer to this day. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum first opened in August 1955, mandated to convey the facts of the atomic bombing, thus contributing to the abolition of nuclear weapons and the realization of genuine and lasting world peace. In June 1994, after the former Peace Memorial Hall was renovated and integrated with the original museum, a new Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum opened in two buildings (East and Main). The East Building presents “Hiroshima Journey,” a record of Hiroshima history before and after the bombing. The Main Building presents the A-bombing itself through photos and artifacts left by the victims. This document is a fully illustrated explication of selected materials from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum collection. We hope it will be used in various ways to spread and strengthen the spirit of Hiroshima, the resolute desire for a peaceful world free from nuclear weapons. | | | Contemporary Global issues in Social Sciences
