Raj Kamal Jha is Chief Editor of The Indian Express which has won the Vienna-based International Press Institute’s Award for Excellence in Journalism five times. Jha led the newspaper’s team that investigated the Panama Papers with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists for which the consortium won the Pulitzer Prize. He was awarded Editor of the Year by the International Advertising Association’s India chapter for his “bold and exemplary leadership” of a national newsroom during the pandemic. Raj is also the author of six novels; his most recent, The Patient in Bed Number 12, won the Ruskin Bond Award for Fiction last year. He’s been awarded Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize for his novel The City and the Sea (based on the Delhi rape) which Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen called “a book you have to read… an extraordinary combination of philosophy and allegory.” His first novel, The Blue Bedspread, was named by BBC, to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, as one of the 10 best books for the decade 1992-2001. A mechanical engineering graduate from IIT Kharagpur and a Master’s from University of Southern California, Los Angeles, Raj has been a visiting professor in international journalism at University of California, Berkeley. He has been awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award by IIT-Kharagpur.
