THEME PAPER WRITERS

Prof. Mahendra P Lama is a Professor of South Asian Economies at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He is also Chief Economic Adviser to the Chief Minister of Sikkim with a Cabinet Minister rank. He was India's representative in the Independent Expert Group set up by the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in 1997. He has extensively worked on the issues of trade, investment and energy cooperation in South Asia. He has closely worked with the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (Islamabad), Centre for Policy Dialogue, Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies and Bangladesh Unnayan Parishad (Dhaka), Institute of Integrated Development Studies (Kathmandu), Centre for Ethnic Studies and Institute of Policy Studies (Colombo) and Centre for Bhutan Studies (Thimphu). A prolific writer, he is also the author of Sikkim Human Development Report 2001.

Prof. Kanti Bajpai is presently the Headmaster of The Doon School. He earlier taught at the Centre for International Politics, Organization and Disarmament, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He was a visiting Fellow of Australian Defence Force Academy before which he was with the University of Notre Dame and at the Brookings Institute. He also taught at M.S University, Baroda and Wesleyan University, USA. He was a Resident Fellow at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Contemporary Studies, New Delhi. Prof. Bajpai obtained his PhD in Political Science from University of Illinois, USA under Prof. Stephen P Cohen as a guide, who is presently with the Brookings Institute. He has extensively written on International Peace and Security, South Asian Strategic Issues and Human Security.

Prof. C. Raja Mohan is currently Professor of South Asian Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He is a columnist on national security affairs for The Hindu, a leading English language newspaper in India. He was the Strategic Affairs Editor of The Hindu during 1995-2003. He was earlier at The Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses in New Delhi, where he worked on arms control and security issues. During 1992-93, he was a Jennings Randolph Peace Fellow at the U.S. Institute for Peace in Washington D.C. He has a masters degree in Nuclear Physics and a Ph.D. in international relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. During 1998-99, he was a member of the India's National Security Advisory Board. His book, Crossing the Rubicon: The Shaping of India's New Foreign Policy has been published by Penguin India in April 2003.
