South
Asia Study Group was launched consisting of young
members from academia, business, NGOs and media. The
main objective of the group, which expects to meet
regularly, is to discuss local, national and global
issues relating to South Asia from a multidisciplinary
perspective. The group strives to become a regular
forum for discussion on South Asian issues and shall
also strive to generate greater interest and awareness
on South Asia in Goa and the region. The Project team
has prepared a South Asia fact-sheet which will be
useful for students, researchers and the lay public
interested on South Asia in general.
Several events have
been organized by the Group so far, which have included
a brainstorming session on aims and objectives of
the group, a talk by former Ambassadors C
V Ranganathan and Deb Mukherjee
on India and Her Neighbours, and a discussion on an
Article on Civil Society and its institutions
by renowned Sociologist Prof. Andre Beteille.
More recently Mr.
Arjun Halarnkar,
Programme Officer and Mr. Joel D'Silva,
Research Associate, South Asia Together attended an
International Conference on 'Peace and
Justice in South Asia' 24-26 Feb. 2006
in Mumbai. They followed this up with a presentation
on the same theme at the South Asia Study Group.
The
Study Group conducted a Talk/ Presentation on 'Contemporary
Developments in Nepal & Options for India'
on 16th May 2006.
The presentation was made by Dr. Rahul Tripathi,
Project Director and Mr. Joel D'Silva,
Research Associate. The talk included
an audio-visual
presentation on the recent happenings in Nepal
where the popular movement against
Monarchy has led to a realignment of political forces
in the country. It also focused on the challenges
before the new government which has the twin tasks
of national consolidation and political reconciliation
with the Maoists, failing which there could be another
round of uncertainty in the landlocked nation. It
also analysed India's role and options in this context.
The presentation was
well attended and followed by an intense discussion.
