“India’s looming crisis? Too many men”

by Annie Gowen

Annie Gowen is The Washington Post’s India bureau chief and has reported for The Post throughout South Asia and the Middle East since 2013. Before going to India, she was a member of The Post’s social issues team covering wealth and inequality.
There are 34 million more men in China than women. India has an excess of 37 million men, more than the total population of Canada. The consequences of having too many men are potentially destabilizing in terms of employment, savings rate, consumption, property prices, crime, prostitution and trafficking. In this talk, Annie Gowen, India Bureau Chief, The Washington Post – who co-wrote a story on the subject earlier this April – will discuss the disturbing consequences of having too many men.
